Sudoku
Fill the grid so every row, column, and box has 1–9!
12 games picked for this age. Free in the browser, no ads, no sign-up, nothing to download.
Nine-year-olds can handle real logic: if this square can't be a 3, and that one must be, then this one is a 5. They can follow written clues, hold several possibilities in mind at once, and stick with a hard puzzle because solving it feels good. Many have also outgrown anything that looks like it was made for little kids.
These are games adults play too. Sudoku, KenKen and Nonogram are number and logic puzzles; Sudoku has an Easy setting to start on. Minesweeper and Logic Puzzles are pure deduction. Secret Message asks them to crack a code from letter patterns. Reversi and Tower of Hanoi reward thinking several moves ahead. Tower Stack is the one to reach for when they need a break from thinking.

Most 9 year olds are in grade 4. These free sheets print on ordinary paper and come with answer keys where there are answers to check.
Most have an easier starting point. Sudoku has an Easy setting, and Tower of Hanoi begins with three discs before working up to eight. A nine-year-old who likes puzzles will find a level that fits.
