Solve math problems against the clock!

By seven, most children read independently, add two-digit numbers and are starting to want a real challenge. They notice when a game is too easy and lose interest quickly. They also start to enjoy games with an opponent who plays properly, and can sit with a puzzle for ten minutes if it is a good one.
So this list steps up. Quick Math and Shut the Box ask for fast mental arithmetic; Magic Square makes adding to a target into a puzzle. Word Scramble and Word Ladder build spelling through play. Checkers, Dots and Boxes and Mancala are proper strategy games against a computer opponent that plays to win. Sokoban and Tetris need planning several moves ahead. Melody Tap is there for children who would rather keep a beat than solve a puzzle.

Most 7 year olds are in grade 2. These free sheets print on ordinary paper and come with answer keys where there are answers to check.
Try the strategy games here: Dots and Boxes on hard, Checkers, or Mancala. Sokoban's later levels are genuinely tricky too. Quick Math also lets you switch to multiplication once addition feels too easy.
Mancala works as a two-player game on one screen as well as against the computer. Dice Race, on the games for 5 year olds page, takes up to four players.
