Volcanoes
Name Date Score
A volcano is an opening in the Earth's surface. Deep underground, it is so hot that rock melts into a thick liquid called magma. When pressure builds up, the magma pushes its way up and bursts out of the volcano. Once it reaches the surface, the melted rock is called lava. Lava is extremely hot and glows bright orange. As lava cools, it hardens into new rock. Over many eruptions, this new rock can build a tall mountain.
